Buying a car in Norway, and the related formalities

When deciding to buy a car in Norway, you should bear in mind a few formal issues. The necessary documents slightly differ depending on whether the car is purchased for use in Norwegian territory or whether it will be imported and registered in Poland. Below is a description of how to proceed in both cases.

First case - use in Norway

When buying it is worth checking the car in advance its formal status. The key issues include verifying things such as:

- car debt

– paid taxes

- whether the car has EU permits

These things can be easily verified. Car purchase in Norway - documents

In accordance with applicable law, if the transaction regarding purchase and sale cars are purchased between private persons, you must have the sales registration document with you (standard: salgsmelding na print NA 0232). It must be prepared in two copies, one for the seller and the buyer. The obligation to report the fact of sale rests with the former.

At the time of purchase, it is worth obtaining information from the seller regarding the payment of the annual fee charged by the customs office. If the seller is in arrears, the obligation to pay it will rest with the buyer. And its payment is necessary to register the car - in the absence of it, State Highways Authority will not perform this action.

Buyer's Responsibilities

In order to purchase a car in Norway, the buyer must have Norwegian driving license personal number. It may be permanent or temporary. However, if the car is purchased by a company, it must be assigned an organization number. These issues are necessary to register a car with Statens Vegvesen.

The buyer is also required to take out car insurance. At the same time, as in Poland, only a civil liability policy (nor. Ansvarforsikring) is obligatory. Optionally, you can consider Norwegian autocasco in two types - helmet (basic) or delkasko (extended). In the latter case, the vehicle owner will receive compensation, among others as a result of car theft, glass damage, fire, etc.

Car registration in Norway

Buying a car in Norway is one thing. You also need to register the vehicle in your name. This process is not complicated. The first step is performed by the seller himself - he is obliged to report the fact of sale and attach a copy of the other party ID card to this report. If the car has paid taxes, Statens Vegvesen will send the buyer an invoice for the registration fee. After paying this fee, the new owner will receive a new registration certificate by mail. Only at this stage can you legally use the car in Norway.

Second case - import to Poland

The purchase of a car in Norway and its return to Poland requires several formalities:

- it is necessary to undergo customs and transport clearance

- pay the excise duty

- VAT must be paid or a certificate of exemption must be obtained

It should be noted that vehicles whose value does not exceed PLN 6 are exempt from customs duties. EURO. To document this, you must complete a form in Norway EUR 1, which must be stamped at the border.

Passage of the shipping clearance is related to the completion and submission of the following documents to the Customs Office: SAD application, a document confirming the ownership of the car and original vehicle documents from Norway.

However, the obligation to pay VAT occurs when the car is used within the framework of business or when it has less than 6 thousand kilometers traveled. In any other case, the buyer is exempt from this tax.

Resettlement property

It's worth it though be aware that the car can be imported as resettlement property. If the car is classified this way, its owner will not have to pay excise tax. However, for this to happen, they have to stay the following criteria are met:

- the car must be in the possession of the owner at least 6 months in Norway

- the car must be owned by the person bringing it at least one year after coming to Poland

- the vehicle must be brought to Poland no later than one year after the official move

Registration in Poland

After completing all formalities and paying the necessary taxes, the car must be registered in Poland. This can be done in the locally competent Poviat Starosty and for this purpose you should have all the necessary documents, i.e .:

- original registration certificate

- a document confirming the purchase of the vehicle

- proof of customs clearance

- ID card

- important technical inspection

- plates

- confirmation of payment of excise duty

- correctly completed application

A temporary proof will be issued after registration. It is only valid for 30 days. As a rule, after two weeks, you can pick up the registration document, thanks to which you will be able to drive the car legally on Polish roads.
