- The government is starting today a historic investment in high-speed broadband in rural areas. Norway will be the best in the world in terms of digitization as targeted investment in high-speed broadband is needed in areas that do not currently have such an offer, says Digitization Minister Linda Hofstad Helleland.
The new action that the government is taking now is a type of barter with mobile service providers who want access to important 5G frequencies that will be auctioned. Companies receive up to 560 million rebates in exchange for the expansion of a high-speed broadband connection (100 Mbit / s) for at least the same amount in the regions.
Norway has the best mobile and broadband access in Europe. This ambitious government target from 2016 of 100 Mbit/s to 90 percent. Households by the end of 2020 has been achieved.
“But it's all the harder to be the one who doesn't have good enough access. That is why this measure is so important. I look forward to seeing even more people and businesses get access to high-speed broadband with this important regional investment, says Helleland.
