– Driving under the influence of alcohol is one of the main causes of serious road accidents in Norway. For many years, amphetamine has been one of the substances most frequently detected among drivers suspected of driving under the influence of drugs. It is also a substance detected in many drivers involved road accidents. That's why we now want to set sentence limits for amphetamines corresponding to 0,5 and 1,2 per mille of alcohol, says Transport Minister Knut Arild Hareide.

Prominent specialists in the field of clinical pharmacology in Norway have prepared a report

At the request of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, a reference group led by the University Hospital in Oslo, which includes eminent specialists in the field of clinical pharmacology in the country, prepared a report entitled "Revision of the provisions on the set limits for exposure to narcotic drugs or drugs other than alcohol, etc." Among other things, this report proposes limits on amphetamines of 0,5 and 1,2 per mille of alcohol.
The Department of Transport and Communications supports the group's assessments and conclusions, and the references contained in the report. The Ministry of Transport and Communications presents for consultation a proposal of changes to the provisions on permanent borders. The consultation deadline is September 30, 2021.

“When we know that several people involved in road traffic accidents have been diagnosed with amphetamines and that this is a growing problem, I think it is time to equate amphetamine use with alcohol and set fixed sentence limits for this drug as well. The introduction of rigid borders could increase traffic safety, contribute to equal treatment and streamline court proceedings, says the Minister of Transport and Communications.
