Facts about the parliamentary election system in Norway
Based on direct elections and proportional representation in multi-member constituencies.
Each of the country's 19 former provinces constitutes a constituency.
169 representatives are elected to the Storting. The number of representatives from each constituency depends on the size of the population and area of the constituency. Municipalities with a low population density have more representatives than the population would suggest.
Of the representatives, 150 are elected as direct seats on the basis of election results in the constituency, while 19, with one seat per constituency, are elected as equalization seats.
Compensation seats are distributed proportionally among electoral lists that have received fewer direct seats than their support at the national level would indicate.
Only parties that have reached the 4% threshold are taken into account for the breakdown of the equalization seats. all votes cast.
