Heavy rainfall is expected over the weekend - with risk of flooding. If you live in Oslo and Viken, you should take some precautions to avoid any damage.

Według varsom.no rain increases during the week and can cause floods in small and medium-sized rivers. It can lead to surface water in densely populated areas, local floods and landslides. There is also a danger of closed roads and locally difficult driving conditions due to surface water and the danger of aquaplaning.

Often times, simple tricks work best.

Gutters and drains should be cleaned so that the water can drain away. Rainwater and floodwater often take with it items that can clog the sewage system, so clean the garden of things, debris, and twigs that can easily pick up water masses. Also, make sure the drains are not blocked and make sure the water flows freely into the drain, says Therese Nielsen, damage prevention officer at our insurance company Fremtind.

Full basements have become a common problem with heavy rainfall. Therefore, remove valuables from the basement and garage.

- At least you should pick up items from the ground or put them in waterproof containers. Keep doors and windows to the basement open, and at worst consider sealing with sandbags, says Nielsen.

Don't forget your car, boat and campsite

If you have assets near a river or lake in an area where heavy rainfall or flooding has been reported, you should consider dragging them further away from the shore.

- During heavy rainfall and flooding, many cars and trailers in underground parking lots are damaged, which, unlike houses, can be moved out of risk areas. Experience shows that the campsites are exposed as they are located along the banks of rivers or lakes. This is Nielsen.

- If you have previously experienced flooding and complications in the pipes due to a large amount of water, you should be especially vigilant. If it has happened once, it can happen again. Nielsen says this applies both to those who live in sensitive areas near river and lake shores, and to people living in densely populated areas where there were previously problems.

Danger of flooding in Oslo and Viken. Good advice against heavy rainfall:

  1. Make sure the drains are open so that the water can run off freely.
  2. Make sure nearby streams are not piled up with garden debris or other objects.
  3. Remove large twigs and objects that may obstruct the free flow of water. Move them to a place where they cannot be carried by water.
  4. Clear the garden of furniture, bulk materials, barbecues, and items that could be picked up by flood waters.
  5. If there is a risk of water entering the basement or garage, pick up items from the floor. Place items on shelves and in plastic boxes that are spill-resistant.
  6. Remove loose carpets and other loose floor coverings.
  7. Close the doors and windows to the basement and attic. If necessary, cover with sandbags.
  8. Follow news broadcasts and news from local authorities. In the event of a major incident, the authorities can implement measures.
  9. Make an appointment with neighbors or friends to take action if you are not at home.
