Patent growth record in the Nordic countries, but decline in Norway.

The pandemic does not appear to have stopped innovation capacity in many countries of the world. However, Norway is the only Nordic country that will not contribute to the increase in the number of European patent applications in 2021.

Other Scandinavian countries are seeing strong growth. Norway ranks 25th with a slight decline in applications. Sweden does it best and lands in the top ten of all countries in the world, next to incl. USA and Germany. Chinese companies are responsible for the largest growth (24%).

We must increase the pace of innovation in both products and services

Norway's position can be attributed to the fact that its business composition is different than in neighboring countries. Nevertheless, the director of the Norwegian Patent Office, Kathrine Myhre, is concerned about this development.

- These numbers show that we need to increase the pace of innovation in both products and services. We still live well on our raw materials economy, but at the same time it is important for the restructuring and development of green industry, he says and points out that although we are a small country, we have good conditions for success.

If you look at the patent applications on. million inhabitants, Norway ranks 16th.

Mostly in digital communication, medical technology, and computer technology
