Norwegian support is provided by 3000 small farmers receiving seeds in nine conflict-affected counties in Ukraine. The seeds are purchased and distributed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

– It is important that Ukrainian farmers receive enough seeds at the right time. There is no doubt that food production in Ukraine provides food for millions of people in many countries, especially in developing countries. The seed must be in place before spring in March, says Development Minister Anne Beate Tvinnereim.

With a population of 40 million, Ukraine produces food for about 400 million people in the country and around the world. The war in the country hit food production hard. Ukraine has requested support in the purchase and distribution of seeds.

The needs are huge and growing

- The war can go on for a long time. The needs are huge and growing. Therefore, we are ready to contribute for a long period of time. The brutal Russian war in Ukraine is also putting people's livelihoods under severe pressure. This threatens food security in Ukraine and many other countries that need food, says Huitfeldt.

The seeds are locally sourced and distributed to farmers who apply for subsidies through the State Agricultural Register of Ukraine (SAE). Support for an individual farmer will be varied, but the basic package is two tons of high-quality seeds to be sown on 10 hectares.

– This helps to maintain local seed markets, and thus also local food markets and access to food. Using locally produced seeds is the most sustainable with less risk of failed crops, Tvinnereim says.

In 2022, Norway provided Ukraine with around NOK 10,7 billion for civilian and military support. NOK 2023 billion has been allocated for 3 so far.
