Do you commute to work every day? Remember that the allowance for commuting to work has increased significantly.
The government has significantly increased the travel expense deduction. Keep this in mind when you receive a tax notice from the Norwegian Tax Administration (Skatteetaten). It may pay off.
Whether you have already received them or will receive them soon. For example, if you commute to work, it would also be a good idea to review this year's tax return carefully. The government has significantly increased the travel deduction in 2022.
Many entries on your tax return are pre-filled, but this does not include travel deductions. So you must ensure that you complete it yourself if it is relevant to you so that you can take advantage of the increased deduction when your tax return is later.

“We promised to increase the deduction for commuters and we have implemented it. "This will mean those who have a long commute to and from work will get less tax when they file their tax return in the spring," says Finance Minister Trygve Slagsvold Vedum.
The table below presents travel allowances for selected routes with tax regulations for 2021 and 2022. 230 travel days have been assumed.
kilometers both ways | 2021 | 2022 | |
Oslo-Hamar | 254 | 60 499 | 82393 |
Bergen-Voss | 202 | 48578 | 62659 |
Tromso- Nordkjosbotn | 145 | 28126 | 41028 |
Trondheim-Orkanger | 85 | 6598 | 18258 |
Kristiansand-Evje | 128 | 22026 | 34576 |
The examples in the table do not take into account the possible deductions of actual expenditure on tolls and ferries for those who save two hours of travel time compared to public transport.

Increased deduction for commuting to work
It is the 2022 regulations that apply to the 2022 tax return, which Skatteetaten has now started sending to taxpayers in the country. In 2022, the government significantly increased the deduction for commuting.
- In 2021, there were two toll deduction rates: NOK 1,56 per kilometer under 50 kilometers and NOK 000 per kilometer over 0,76 kilometers. It has now been replaced by a single, higher rate of NOK 50 per kilometer.
- To receive the 2021 commuting deduction, the taxpayer had to travel a daily distance of approximately 67 kilometers round-trip between home and work.
- In 2022, taxpayers who travel a distance of around 37 kilometers each way from home to work each day will be able to claim a travel deduction.
- The minimum amount has been reduced from NOK 23 in 900 to NOK 2021 in 14.
- The lower minimum amounts mean that anyone who is eligible for a travel deduction receives an increased deduction. And now even more people who travel the shorter distance between home and work get a travel deduction, says Vedum

You can see for yourself how the travel to work deduction works for you and your wallet. Skatteetaten has, both on its website and on your tax return, a separate guide that will also help you find out how much you can claim as a business travel deduction.
On this website skatteetaten.no you will find a separate commute deduction calculator and more information about the applicable rules.
“Whether they are commuters, people dependent on ferries or those dependent on short-haul networks. The travel expense deduction is based on the government's goal that the tax and duty system should contribute more strongly to social and geographic redistribution, says Vedum.
