According to the tax office (skatteetaten), on Wednesday, May 31, the deadline for submitting tax returns for self-employed persons expires. Less than a week before the deadline, more than 172 sole proprietorships filed their tax returns. There are slightly fewer of them than in the same period last year.

“We expect many to meet the deadline in the last week,” says Marta Johanne Gjengedal, director at the Norwegian Tax Agency.

Figures show that 172 one-person businesses have already filed their tax returns this year. At the same time last year, 279 companies filed their tax returns.

Gjengedal warns against making common mistakes when applying:

– Anyone who has received a tax return for entrepreneurs must submit it electronically within the prescribed period. This applies even if you have not made any changes, have not had any activity in the last year or have closed your business, says Gjengedal.

New tax information for many people

Anyone who runs a sole proprietorship received a new tax note in 2022 and could decide for themselves whether they want to use the new solution. As with the income tax return for employees and retirees, all forms have been removed and replaced with subject areas. This year, all sole proprietorships must file a new tax return for the 2022 income year.

- The new tax return should shorten the time and improve the quality of the information submitted - says Marta Johanne Gjengedal.

So far, companies have submitted tax returns, trade declarations and attachment forms. When submitting a tax return, traders had to deal with as many as 60 forms with over 7000 fields, and they had to have an overview and know what was on them.

In 2023, you can apply for a deferral for all customers

Accountants, auditors and advisors can apply for a 2023-day deferral in 30 on behalf of all their clients for the 2022 income year.

Basically, you can claim up to 10 percent of your customer base. The tax authority has come to the conclusion that this year, with the large-scale introduction of new solutions, it is appropriate for accountants, auditors and advisors who need an extended deadline to apply for it for all their clients.

The deadline for submitting tax returns for entrepreneurs is May 31. You must apply for a deferment before the deadline expires. If postponed, the application deadline is June 30.

Everyone must file a new tax return next year

This year is the last year that businesses can choose whether to file a new tax return or use the forms at Altinn.

In 2024, for the 2023 income year, all business owners must submit a new tax return. It must be provided through an accounting or annual settlement system. Using forms in Altinn will no longer be possible.

– We recommend that those who already run a business check with their accounting or annual settlement system provider whether they support the submission of a new tax return – says Marta Johanne Gjengedal.

If your accountant, auditor or advisor provides you with a tax return, you can contact them about the change.

– If you do not use an accounting or annual settlement system today, we recommend that you find a supplier that suits you and your needs now, encourages Gjengedal.
