Problems with exchanging Norwegian currency abroad

Norges Bank writes on its website that it receives signals about problems with exchanging the Norwegian krone abroad.

Norges Bank has received information that some banks in Norway have become more restrictive in buying Norwegian banknotes from abroad, citing money laundering laws. This led to the fact that some foreign banks and exchange offices stopped accepting the Norwegian currency. As far as is known, similar problems also exist with the exchange of Danish and Swedish currency outside Scandinavia. We wrote about this situation in our recent article. As Norges Bank writes, the situation that has arisen is not the result of decisions or actions of Norges Bank. Banknotes are traded between commercial entities across national borders, and there are banks in Norway that accept cash deposits. Such activities are subject to general banking regulations.

Norges Bank is currently working to obtain additional information. Until then, Norwegians planning to leave behind border should consider exchanging currency before departure or using cards or other electronic means of payment during the trip.
