Passport and national ID card supplier Thales today informed the Norwegian Police Directorate that they had detected a technical error in the documents. This situation may apply to a whole batch of national identity cards produced for Norway. This means that the delivery time is increased from six weeks to seven for requests received from today, August 26.

- We have received information that an error has been detected that may make the chip unreadable. After the tests, it is not yet known whether the error affects the entire batch that went to Norway, or only a smaller part of it. Therefore, the Norwegian Police Directorate now decides to wait for the new batch so that we can be sure that people will receive a completely secure identity document and will not get into a difficult situation when they use the document, says department director Bjørn Vandvik.

This error means delays

The supplier informs that it will take five weeks before it is able to produce a new batch of documents. This problem comes after months of production challenges and passport backlogs.

This situation means that people who apply today will receive their document within six to eight weeks.

"It's a pity this bug has cropped up and we'd like to apologize to the locals," says Vandvik.
