There are many popular opinions about what education in Norway looks like - the curiosities and costs are the issues that we raised on our radio in order to dispel all doubts about Norwegian education.

Education in Norway - interesting facts

The most important differences between the educational system in Norway and the one known from Poland is the fact that Norwegian schools provide access to free textbooks and school supplies. This does not mean, however, that learning for our children is not associated with any costs.

Norway education - how much does it cost?

In order not to be groundless, we talked about the costs with our students, whose children are currently enrolled in Norwegian educational institutions. In our opinion, this is the most reliable source of information - who, if not parents, knows best how much they spend on their children's education?

Mateusz - our listener - has three school-age children. Annually, it has to spend about 50 thousand. The SAI should ensure that its pupils are provided with appropriate learning conditions. These costs include the following expenses:

  • stay in a day-room - approx. 3 thousand NOK per month,
  • preparing children for school (clothes adequate to the weather, appropriate footwear, etc.) - 2,5 thousand. NOK per month,
  • plus the costs of transport, extracurricular activities, provision of a lunch, etc.

Costs may vary depending on many factors. Another of our listener, with two children aged 8-12, calculated that the monthly cost of preparing pupils for school is approx. PLN 5. NOK. At the same time, in her opinion, this is the level of expenditure that allows meeting only basic needs.

Norway flowing with milk and honey?

Education in Norway is not completely free as it is said. Every Pole living here knows that apart from textbooks and school supplies, there are many other expenses to be reckoned with. The current economic situation, however, provides the opportunity to find a job, thanks to which we will be able to cover all the necessary costs. Is Norway a land of milk and honey? Yes, but this milk and this honey must be earned.

Polish School in Norway - is it worth it?

Currently, Radio Wataha cooperates with schools in Fredrikstad and Moss. They can be treated as institutions offering a form of extra-curricular activities. The difference is that each student receives a diploma at the end, which is recognized by the Ministry of National Education. Thanks to it, the child can continue education in Poland, regardless of the level at which he left education in Norway.

Bilingualism

The greatest benefit of attending a Polish educational institution is the ability to learn to communicate in your mother tongue. Thus, the child becomes bilingual, which is associated with certain advantages. The biggest ones include: fluent knowledge of two languages, greater understanding and tolerance of other cultures.

Classes in Polish

We know cases of Polish emigrants who came to Norway with schoolchildren with insufficient knowledge of the Norwegian language. Enrolling them in a Polish school enables them to acquire knowledge in the same subjects, but in Polish. From this point of view, classes in Polish-language institutions can also be classified as remedial classes conducted in the mother tongue.

Education in Norway - how is it with it?

Education in Norway is partially free. Students receive free textbooks and access to free supplies. However, this does not mean that schooling is completely cost-free. As our readers have calculated, the annual cost of preparing three children for classes is approx. PLN 50 thousand. NOK, while two are not much less, about 45 thousand. NOK. There are also Polish schools that give you the opportunity to learn your mother tongue. The importance of bilingualism of our children has been mentioned many times on the pages of our website. Some people do not want their child to learn Polish communication skills. Taught by their experience, we know that they quickly regret their decision.
