It is available to people who have decided to work in this country. There are several legal aspects that are worth knowing in order to apply for retirement benefits in this Scandinavian country. Especially since it looks slightly different than in Poland. 

Who is entitled to pension rights?

According to Norwegian law, a member of the pension system is any person who has reached the age of 16 and has had continuing social insurance for at least 3 years. It is worth knowing that you can apply for retirement benefits already after the age of 62, but in this case the amount awarded is proportionally lower. The full pension is due after reaching the age of 67. However, to qualify for it, you must have paid NAV pension contributions for 40 years.

The lowest pension in Norway is known as the "mini-pension". It is due to those who have worked in this country for at least 40 years and at the same time paid contributions to the Norwegian Health Fund. Importantly, there is no nationality restriction. The same rights apply to both a Pole and a Norwegian.

You can also receive your old-age pension abroad, but in this case, after turning 67, you must live in Norway for 9 months - it applies only to pensioners who have spent most of their lives abroad. Only after this period is it possible to live elsewhere permanently.

How do I get a higher pension than the minimum pension?

The amount of the retirement pension is determined on the basis of the points awarded, which result from the income earned. It is worth knowing that the possibility of converting them exists up to the age of 75 - even if you are entitled to a full retirement pension, nothing prevents you from working and increasing the amount of the future benefit at the same time.

There are even more factors influencing the value of your pension. It depends, among others, on: depending on whether additional pension contributions were paid. And what was the income from maternity leave, unemployment benefit, sick leave, etc. The amount of the current benefits can be checked on the NAV website in the "Din pension" tab - however, you are required to create an account and log in to it.

Retirement pension in Norway may also be available to Poles. Important information is the fact that he is entitled to a retirement pension after only 3 years of work. On condition, however, that he had continued social security with NAV at that time. Additionally, many workplaces have a "compulsory pension scheme" (nor. Tjenestpensjonsordning). In practice, this means the possibility of obtaining a higher pension. Please ask for details at workplaces.

Please note, however, that the right to minimum pension in Norway a Polish employee will be entitled to it only after 40 years of work. Otherwise, the amount of this benefit will be calculated in direct proportion to the years of service and the amount of remuneration achieved.
