Stavanger will be one of the first climate neutral cities in Europe

Stavanger is one of 112 European cities to be climate neutral by 2030. To be considered climate neutral, the emissions must not exceed what nature and technology can solve.

Under EU requirements, participating cities must aim to reduce at least 80% of their own emissions. This corresponds climate goal, which the commune council has already adopted by 2030. At the same time Norwegia strives for climate neutrality by 2030.

The restructuring process

For the title of one of the 100 climate neutral cities A total of 377 cities applied. Acting Mayor Dagny Sunnanå Hausken is proud that Stavanger has been approved to participate in EU cooperation

– This is an expression of recognition for the work done in this region and the great ambitions we have in this area climate and environment. We now have access to knowledge and resources in the EU. At the same time, we have the opportunity to cooperate and learn from other cities with equally ambitious climate and environmental goals as us, says Sunnanå Hausken.

"The restructuring will create requirements for the municipality, but at the same time will open up new and exciting opportunities," he says.

Stavanger takes the initiative

This process is part of a larger program in which the EU has identified five major global societal challenges. In this process, climate-neutral cities are one of the areas of focus. Director of Environmental Affairs and Urban Development Leidulf Skjørestad is sure that this is a serious restructuring process that will require the municipality to involve the entire community.

– The commune now plays a coordinating role and invites you to this process. In this initiative, we, together with business, citizens, organizations, academic environment and other important social actors, we will find solutions for how society can function within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals, says Leidulf Skjørestad

Work starts now

- The EU has prepared an implementation plan, which we will now divide into local action and financing plans. This will be done in collaboration with local actors as soon as possible, says Skjørestad.

There will be different measures had an impact on the entire society. At the same time, Skjørestad points out that it is not the EU that decides how to solve this problem.

– The EU provides resources and methodology on how, in cooperation with other cities and national authorities, we can achieve the goal of climate neutrality, but we decide how in Stavanger we achieve this goal most effectively.

There is no doubt that we have a large and demanding job ahead of us. But Mayor Sunnanå Hausken is optimistic about the expertise in Stavanger.

– There is no doubt that this will demand a lot from all of us. Both us, politicians, administration and the rest of society. But there is already close cooperation between business, public sector, citizens and academia. Moreover, we have a strong entrepreneurial spirit in Stavanger. If we can bring out the best in each other and work well together, there are almost no limits to what we can achieve, says Hausken.
