"Play with your dog on vacation, but remember about the leash," says Agriculture and Food Minister Sandra Borch.

The leash is for all dogs. A dog must not be allowed to walk freely, even if it is very obedient. In the period from April 1 to August 20, the dog must either be on a leash or be properly fenced.

In municipalities where a lot of animals are grazed on pastures, municipalities can issue restraining orders, which will ensure the protection of grazing animals also after August 20. Therefore, it is worth checking what regulations are in force in the municipality you visit. Information can be found in the municipalities and in Lovdata, in the tab local regulations.

Use a lanyard to avoid trouble

Dogs hunting pets, reindeer or game can cause harm even if they do not bite. Hunting itself can cause fatigue and heatstroke in a hunted animal. Some animals may fall into lakes or the sea from steep slopes. And when the dog hunts grazing animals, their offspring may escape.

Leash waiver

The Dogs Act provides for a few exceptions to the use of a leash, but it is important to be aware that even if you have a leash release, a dog handler has a duty of care. This is your responsibility to prevent your dog from harming people or animals.

It's also important to be aware that even you who are caring for a dog other than yours are defined as the owner of a dog. So you have the same responsibility as its owner.

"I wish both bipeds and quadrupeds a good summer," says Borch.
