Today, Great Britain begins mass vaccination. Margaret, 90, was the first to receive the vaccine in the country. The coronavirus vaccine was first used in an authorized UK immunization program.

90-year-old Margaret Keenan, the grandmother of four, was the first person in the world to receive the vaccine on Tuesday at 5:31 am at the University Hospital in Coventry.

In 21 days he will receive a supplement to the vaccine, the so-called "Booster" so that it is as protected against the virus as possible.

Earlier this week, a corona vaccine that was developed by the German company BioNTech. Made with financial support from the US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, urgently approved in the UK. They are the first country in the world to use this vaccine.

The country will begin mass vaccinating the population this week, with 50 hospitals now ready to receive the vaccine.

People over 80 are in the first place, in addition to nursing home staff. In this way, they will protect the most vulnerable and elderly people in society and ensure a quick return to normal life.

FDA report on the Pfizer vaccine: Good protection after the first dose

A new report presented by the US FDA shows that the vaccine works well for all groups that have received the vaccine - including the elderly.

The Pfizer vaccine offers good protection against COVID-19 within ten days of the first dose, according to a new FDA report.

Previously, it was known that the vaccine was 95% effective after two doses three weeks apart. The new data therefore shows that protection starts earlier. The report estimates the effect at 52,4 percent after the first dose and before the second dose.

They saw this because the coronavirus infection decreased in the vaccinated group ten days after the first dose, while it continued to increase in the placebo group.

A total of 43 people participated in the tests. Half received the vaccine, half the placebo.

In the past, it was not sure with whom vaccine will work best.

The report now shows that it is having a good effect in all the groups that tested the vaccine: both men and women, and different ethnic groups. It has also proven effective in overweight people, which increases the risk of severe Covid-19 disease.

In addition, it seems to work just as well for people over 55 as below.

Exceptionally good

Virologist Svein Arne Nordbø believes that efficacy among people over 55 is better than you might expect.

- It's exceptionally good. The oldest age groups tend to respond less to the vaccine than younger people. This includes the flu vaccine, for example, which is less effective in older age groups than in younger age groups, he says.

The Pfizer vaccine is the vaccine best suited for approval as the first in Norway.

  • The vaccine approval process has already started in Europe, and therefore also in Norway:

. Side effects

A few people who got the vaccine felt unwell within hours / days after the second dose:

  • Age 16–55: More than half were exhausted and had headaches. One-third had chills and 37% had muscle aches.
  • Over 55: About half felt exhausted, a third had a headache, a quarter had chills, and 27 percent had muscle aches.

So it occurs minimal difference in side effects between individuals over and under 55 years of age, with a slight advantage among younger groups.

In the vaccinated group: Two died and four had facial paralysis

Among the study participants who did not receive the vaccine, there were four deaths and two deaths among those who received the vaccine. Two in the vaccinated group were over 55 years of age. They died of cardiovascular disease 65 days after dosing two and three days after the first dose, respectively.

The U.S. Medicines Agency finds that there have been no more deaths among vaccinated people than in the normal unvaccinated population of this age.

So there is no evidence that the vaccine increases the risk of such incidents, says FHI researcher Preben Aavitsland
