Paternity leave in Norway is granted for 15 weeks. Provided that the birth or adoption took place after July 1, 2018. If this happened before June 30, 2018, the duration of the leave is only 10 weeks.

Paternity leave in Norway - conditions

You can take paternity leave in Norway provided you meet a number of requirements. The basic condition is that the criteria which entitle both the father and the mother to receive parental benefit are met. What is parental benefit and how do I get it? Find out more >>>

In addition, the following conditions must be met:

  • If the mother is alone and takes care of the child, and is additionally entitled to parental benefit, the entitlement to paternity leave is transferred to the maternity leave,
  • The father can agree that he will continue to receive Paternity Benefit. In this case, you must request it, enclosing a confirmation from the mother that you are caring for the child on the days for which you are applying,
  • If the mother is not entitled to parental allowance and has received a one-time allowance, the father is not entitled to paternity allowance,
  • If the parents are not entitled to parental allowance, the weeks are carried over to paternity allowance.

Paternity Benefit is 15 weeks if the birth or adoption is on or after 1 July 2018. In the case of birth or adoption until June 30, 2018, the free time is 10 weeks.

If you do not take your paternity leave, these weeks will be lost. Unless the mother applies for the paternity leave to be transferred to the amount of the maternity leave she is entitled to. The conclusion may be argued, for example, by the fact that the father is too sick to look after the child.

How to use paternity leave in Norway?

Paternity Benefit can be paid at any time the duration of the allowanceexcept for the weeks before the due date and the first 6 weeks after giving birth. These weeks are reserved for the mother for medical reasons.

You can take it all or use it flexible payouts in several ways. If you wish to postpone Paternity Benefit, NAV must receive a claim by the last day of the joint period. If you apply later, you will lose your benefit. In the mother's decision there is a date on the last day of the common period and you have to keep an eye on the dates.

If you want to use your paternity leave, it is important to apply in time. There is no requirement for the mother to be present when paternity allowance is used up.
