Nakstad: Many people have likely overestimated the effects of the vaccine on coronavirus infections

Many fully vaccinated people are infected with Covid-19, and many may have overestimated the infection-reducing effect of the vaccine, says deputy health director Espen Nakstad.

Infection rates continue to rise both nationally and in many of its largest cities. It has recently been registered in several communes the highest rate so far pandemic infections, and among those infected there are many fully vaccinated.

"Quite a few people have overestimated the effects of vaccines to limit infections," Nakstad told NTB.

He believes that the surge in infections seen in late summer and fall was not particularly surprising given the increase in human contact as society gradually opened up.

- That is why we have already recommended Tisk this summer, an isolation obligation for those who have a positive test and some locally adapted measures. Now it looks like we will need more and more local resources, even though vaccines still offer very good protection, says Nakstad.

He reminds us that while life can be more normal now, the pandemic is not over in Norway.

In fact, there are now more hospitalized patients in the hospital than during the second wave of infection last fall. Therefore, the pandemic is not over, neither for most people, nor for the health service.

Before the weekend, it became clear that the government would not introduce domestic shutdown measures. Instead, the authorities will introduce the certificate in the municipalities that need it. In addition, it is planned that every person over 18 years of age will receive a third dose of the vaccine, the so-called refreshing dose.
