– If we are to meet the skills needs of working life in the future, we need to train many more skilled workers. This good newsthat more and more students are choosing vocational subjects at VG1 this year. So it's very good that more and more girls are opening up to the possibilities of learning subjects such as construction, technology and industrial topics. The government is strongly focusing on vocational subjects. We will spend NOK XNUMX billion this year to strengthen upper secondary education, says Education Minister Tonje Brenna.

More than half choose vocational subjects

Of the 185 students who applied for a high school place, 000 percent were offered a place after the first recruitment. 93 percent received first choice and 87 percent are on the waiting list.

In recent years, about half of the students applied for vocational subjects at VG1. This trend continues, this year it is 52 percent. In total, 1 more applicants for entry-level vocational education programs apply to Vg3100 than pre-study programs. Although the majority have applied for vocational subjects, the numbers of students in the last few years show that still more people are enrolling in preparatory studies than in vocational subjects.

Health and early childhood education is still the vocational education program with the highest number of applicants for VG1 and VG2. Technology and Industry is the vocational education program with the greatest growth in applicants. Today, the number of candidates in VG1 was 530 more than in 2021.

Still big differences between the sexes

As before, there are big differences in what girls and boys are asking for. In 2013, girls accounted for less than five percent of civil engineering and civil engineering students, while just over 12 percent of engineering and industrial students were girls. This year the percentage of girls is 11 and 18 percent, respectively. There have never been more girls applying to these programs than this year.

At the same time, there is a large advantage of girls looking for professions: hairdressers, interior decoration and exhibition designers, here girls constitute 91 percent of candidates. For subjects related to health and education, the figure is 85 percent, while for arts, design, and architecture, girls are 82 percent.

- If we are to achieve better gender balance in working life, more girls and boys have to make non-traditional choices in training and education. It is positive, therefore, that we are now seeing an increase in the number of girls applying for participation in some male-dominated educational programs. So I hope that more boys will also consider their career path. For example, if we are to meet a huge skill demand in the health sector, we need to recruit from among wszystkich young people, says Brenna.
