– A large amount of rainfall in autumn combined with sufficient imports, reduced consumption and low energy production from water reservoirs contributed to the improvement of the situation this winter. It is still important to underline the seriousness of the great uncertainty we are seeing in the European energy market, says Statnett CEO Hilde Tonne.

Filling of warehouses in the south In Norway it was very low at the beginning of autumn, and Statnett and energy authorities were closely monitoring the situation. Energy producers reported on the filling of tanks every week. Since the summer, we have had exceptionally low energy production, high imports and low consumption. The fill rate in southern Norway increased by 22,1 percentage points in 7 weeks. This corresponds to 12,7 TWh and has contributed to reservoir filling now being above the median for the NO1 and NO5 supply areas. However, only 2 TWh below the overall median for southern Norway.

The reporting system worked

– We see that the reporting system has worked and that energy producers are saving water. This is important and contributes to energy security throughout the winter. We also have a good level of gas storage capacity in Europe, so we are now slightly less concerned about the import situation. We will therefore follow the situation closely with the energy authorities, emphasizes Hilde Tonne.

The system of reporting the distribution of tanks by energy producers will be continued. In addition to the import situation, Statnett will continuously assess the amount of snow in the mountains and its impact on filling reservoirs in spring and summer.

At the end of September, Statnett presented possible actions to deal with a very tense energy situation (SAKS measures). While this is now less likely to happen this winter, Statnett will continue to work on developing the measures and assessing their suitability in different situations. This is important to have access to good tools in the event of a potentially very tense energy situation also in the future.
