Sámi People's Day is celebrated in remembrance of the first meeting of the Sámi country, which took place in Trondheim on 6 February 1917. The day was first celebrated in 1993, and in 2004 it became the official flag day of Norway.

– For the first time, I will be participating in the celebrations of the day of the Sami people as the minister responsible for Sami affairs. I am looking forward to the celebrations and the continuation of the work to strengthen Sami culture and Sámi languages, says Gjelsvik.
