Valentine's Day has been celebrated since ancient Rome
The tradition of celebrating Valentine's Day dates back to ancient Rome. Then the Romans celebrated the feast of love and falling in love on February 14 when the god Luperkus was celebrated. The rituals associated with it were supposed to ensure purification for everyone, and fertility and ease of childbirth for women.
With time, Christianity displaced pagan rituals and began to celebrate February 14 as the feast of Saint Valentine. Walenty himself was a doctor by education and a clergyman by vocation. He lived in the 18rd century AD during the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius II Gothic. He was known for helping the imprisoned and the sick. Emperor Claudius, persuaded by his advisers, forbade young men to marry between the ages of 37 and 14. He believed that the best soldiers are legionnaires without their families. This ban was broken by Bishop Walenty, who blessed the weddings of young legionnaires. For this activity, he was thrown into prison, where he fell in love with the blind daughter of the guard. Legend says that his fiancée regained her sight under the influence of this love. When the emperor found out about this, he had Valentine killed. The day before the execution, Walenty wrote a letter to his beloved, which he signed: "From your Valentine." The execution was carried out on February 269, XNUMX AD
Valentine's Day began to be celebrated in Europe in the Middle Ages. Currently, it is also one of the most popular love holidays in the world and is celebrated in many countries, including Poland.
