Snow melting begins on the southern and eastern coasts of Norway. This could cause flooding and flood damage in many places starting next week. Private users, local governments, emergency services and regulators are encouraged to take the necessary actions to prevent and deal with flooding.
“We recommend that local governments, businesses and everyone who lives along rivers and lakes that are at risk of flooding take preventive action in the coming days. This means, for example, moving valuables from basements and ensuring that outlets, gutters and waterways are kept open. It is also important to take caravans away from the affected areas, as well as to secure the boats and jetties from the possible wave,” said Kjetil Lund of the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate.

If the temperature rises steadily, it will take longer for the snow to melt, reducing the risk of major damage. However, in the event of rain or a sudden increase in temperature, the risk of flood damage will increase.
“How the flood situation will develop now depends entirely on the weather. Long-term forecasts from the Meteorological Institute look promising for the coming week. Due to the amount of snow that lies in the mountains, it will take longer for the snow to melt. So we're entering a period where flooding depends on rain and high temperatures," Lund said.
Municipalities should take actions such as clearing waterways, securing critical points, checking equipment and available resources. People responsible for crisis management encourage you to subscribe to flood and landslide warnings via e-mail and SMS from the varsom.no website.
