. On Monday, October 4, the Norwegian Public Roads Authority will publish more driving test dates on www.vegvesen.no.

- From Monday 4 October you can book your driving test yourself. This means that the Norwegian Public Road Administration will revert to the pre-pandemic pattern. This gives less office work to the traffic schools that had the job when the pandemic was most intense, says department director Frode Børstad at the Norwegian Public Roads Authority.

- We are now temporarily extending the booking time from 10 to 16 weeks ahead for a category B driving license. This does not sound like an improvement, but it gives us the flexibility to be able to schedule exams over a longer period of time. We hope that thanks to these changes we will be able to gradually reduce the waiting time for the exam, says Frode Børstad.

Still expect queues

- There are still more candidates who want to make an appointment for an exam than there are free hours. Therefore, there will be a long queue for the exam. However, we hope that the new system will make the exam schedule more predictable for both applicants and road traffic schools, says Frode Børstad.

Greater access to driving exams

So far, in 2021, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration has taken 15 percent more exams than in 2019, the last normal year.

- The increase is due to the fact that there were many more applicants for a driving license than before. Much can be learned from such a special situation as we have had in the last 18 months. Among other things, we learned that the pandemic is not the biggest challenge. A consequence of the pandemic is that many people in the largest cities consider having a driving license as a benefit, as an alternative to transport, in exchange for public transport. Despite the challenges and limitations of the pandemic, we have managed to increase the number of passed driving tests, says Børstad.

- The examination is an important part of ensuring that everyone behind the wheel is a safe driver. Although a lot is happening, we are not reducing the requirements for new drivers. We are constantly working on a zero vision for the dead and seriously injured in road traffic, says Børstad.
