- Starting today, a day's travel is made a little easier in several places thanks to free ferries. The ferry is the lifeblood of society in many places. Here, halved fares and free ferries are an important means of reducing costs, says Transport Minister Jon-Ivar Nygård.

The government has allocated NOK 420 million for free ferries and a reduction in fares of up to 50 percent compared to the tariffs of January 1, 2021. This is in addition to the funds already used to reduce ferry fares.

Thanks to it, from August 16, ferries to islands and other places without a road to the mainland will be free.

– One of the goals of the Hurdalsplattforma was to provide free ferry connections to islands and other destinations with no road connection to the mainland, and to provide free ferry connections with fewer than 100 passengers a year. We have now made preparations for that, says Nygård.

These ferries are free

The government has arranged free ferry connections and fylke councils have taken action by adopting rate reductions to make these connections free.

Reduced rates

They decide whether they want to lower it based on local conditions fees for ferry connections on roads.

As an example of what this can mean for travellers: a commuter who takes the roundtrip ferry between Molde and Vestnes in Møre i Romsdal every working day in a petrol/diesel car with an AutoPASS contract will save approximately NOK 18 in 000 compared to the situation applicable on January 2023, 1.
