Kristi himmelsfarstag in Polish means the Ascension of the Lord. This holiday is passable and celebrated by the Norwegians on the 39th day after Easter. In Catholic traditions, this day is not free from work or study. It is different in the case of Protestants in the Evangelical-Augsburg tradition, who are the dominant group of all believers in Norway.

A day off from work and study

This year, the Ascension will fall on May 10, and in 2019 it will be celebrated on May 30. It is usually celebrated joyfully, although it is not accompanied by the custom of hoisting flags. For the faithful gathered in the Church of Norway, this is a special holiday because it was at this time that Jesus returned to Heaven after his time with the people. This is the final and irrefutable proof that he is the Son of God.
The Ascension of the Lord is a statutory day off from work and study also in the following countries:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • Germany
  • Indonesia
  • Luksemburg
  • The Netherlands
  • Sweden
  • Vanuatus

Not only the Church of Norway is free

Not only members of the Evangelical Church of Augsburg have a day off from studying and work. They also include the faithful gathered in the Evangelical Reformed Church, the Evangelical Methodist Church and the Christian Baptist Church. This the holiday is also solemnly celebrated by the Church Pentecostal.
It is worth noting, however, that as a result of the Church's split into East and West, the date on which this feast falls is different. This year, the Eastern Church (Orthodox) is celebrating the Ascension of the Lord on May 17.

Why are Norwegians baptizing fewer and fewer children?

Catholics also have this holiday

The Ascension of the Lord is also recognized by Catholics, although it is not so solemnly celebrated. This is evidenced by the fact that it is not a statutory day off from work and study. In Poland, it is also a passing festival, but it always falls on the seventh week after Easter. This method of enumerating results from the adopted decree of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.

Why is this holiday celebrated?

According to Christian tradition, Jesus Christ stayed with his disciples for 40 days after he was crucified and buried. After this time, they went to the Mount of Olives, where the Apostles witnessed Jesus' Ascension into Heaven. This event is recorded in the Bible as Mark 16:19, Luke 14: 50-51, and Acts 1: 9-11.
