The names of the new counties in Norway
The idea of carrying out an administrative reform was announced on June 8, 2017. The proposed changes were developed by Hoyre, Frp, Krf and Venstre. The authors of this act assume that the number of administrative districts will be reduced from the current 19 to 11. There was a fierce dispute when naming the newly created administrative units. However, on June 7, 2018, the Storting announced the final names of the new districts. Thus, he ended the dispute.
New names have been adopted
Out of the 11 new districts, only 4 have their current names. These are: More og Romsdal, Rogaland, Oslo and Nordland. The names of the new units are either a combination of two connected circles or have been given a completely new name. In the case of six of them also received variants in Sami and Kwen. The act will finally enter into force on January 1, 2020.
What will change?
- It will be built with Aust-Agder and Vest-Agder Agder
- Hedmark and Oppland will be called each other from 2020 inland
- Hordaland and Sogn of Fjordane will be renamed to Westland
- Troms and Finnmark will eventually be named Troms and Finnmark. Sami and Quene variants were also adopted, successively: Roms and Finnmark and Tromss and Finmark
- Telemark and Vestfold will be named Vestfold and Telemark
It is worth recalling that one region was subject to changes as early as January 1 this year. Nord-Trondelag and Sor-Trondelag have already been merged and have been called Trondelag since the beginning of this year. There is also a Sami variant of the name - Troondelage.
