It is commonly believed that Norway is synonymous with beautiful fjords, unspoiled nature, northern lights, glaciers and generally positive elements. However, hardly anyone would bet that this is the country with one of the highest incidence rates of… chlamydia. The 7-Eleven chain of stores (the equivalent of the Polish Żabka) decided to emphasize this in its advertising spot.

It starts beautifully
The latest advertising spot of the 7-eleven convenience store chain does not start spectacularly. We see a beautiful view of the Norwegian fjords. We are informed about what we basically already know – “Norway. Land of Fjords. Mountains. Sun inside at night. And chlamydia. Norway has one of the highest chlamydia incidence rates in Europe. Are you a foreigner? Protect yourself against the natives! Buy condoms at 7-eleven.”
Advertising after the gang
However, the advertising spot did not stop there. Along with its release, posters with a clear message were hung in all 7-eleven stores with a clear message - "Welcome in Norway, the land of chlamydia". As if that wasn't enough, they were hung in one of the places most frequently visited by tourists. That is, the station in Oslo.

VisitNorway appalled
In an interview with one of the Norwegian newspapers, representatives of the travel portal VisitNorway.no expressed their indignation with such an advertising campaign. In their opinion, this puts the Norwegians in a negative light. He portrays them as a sexually promiscuous nation made up of sex-madmen. In their opinion, this has nothing to do with reality. Therefore, they believe that this advertisement is not a promotion, but an image catastrophe.
What is chlamydia?
Chlamydia is biologically a sexually transmitted bacterium. She is responsible for diseases of the genitourinary system, incl. Hodgkin's disease, nongonococcal urethritis or mucopurulent inflammation of the uterus. A pregnant woman infected with it is at high risk of miscarriage.
