Sylwia Massalska is a 32-year-old woman who came to Norway 6 years ago. Sewing dresses is her great passion and hobby, which she would like to make a job of in the future. How did it start, and is sewing a difficult profession? We answer these and other questions below.
Sylwia is a 32-year-old woman who is a spatial planner by profession. She came to Norway 6 years ago in order not to live a long distance with her then boyfriend, and now her husband. Where did the sewing idea come from? Moving to a foreign country meant that Sylwia had a lot of free time before she found a job. One day, she was browsing the Internet and came across an interesting blog about sewing. The blogger running the website showed step by step how to sew a given garment. Sylwia became interested in this topic and decided that she would also start sewing. Following the blow and visiting Poland, she bought her first, 40-year-old machine, the Łucznik, on which she in fact sews to this day.
The beginnings are always difficult
The beginnings of Sylwia's sewing were not easy, but who heard of easy beginnings? 🙂 As a woman is a self-taught woman, each new thing she sews was created by trial and error. At the very beginning of sewing, Sylwia used the remnants of fabrics that she got from her aunt. If a project was successfully completed, the woman set herself an even higher bar. Over time, people who were around Sylwia and saw what she creates, persuaded her to start showing her works. The first step was to set up an Instagram account, and then a blog, where today she teaches herself how to sew. Sylwia also has a fanpage on Facebook and as she claims "Thanks to social media, many people found out about me."

How long does it take to sew a dress?
To this question, Sylwia replies that it all depends on the type of dress. There are designs that she manages to sew in half a day, and others that require several days of commitment. The woman emphasizes that sewing a dress is not only cutting out pieces of fabric, but it is primarily: an idea, form, selection and purchase of material. Additionally, the material should be prevented from shrinking and stretching. An essential element is also at least one fitting and final finishing of the dress. Sylwia claims that many consumers do not realize how much work is behind the dress.
Where do orders for dresses come from?
For a very long time, Sylwia did not accept orders. She didn't feel ready for it yet. She sewed only for her relatives and friends. Currently, orders for dresses come most often from Poles and friends of various nationalities living in Norway. Sylwia cannot imagine its implementation orders per person, who lives in Poland, because she is not able to try on the dress. In such situations, unfortunately, she is forced to refuse.
