Tax settlement in Norway for 2018 must be made by April 30, 2019. Individuals may, however, extend this deadline until the end of May. The Tax Office will calculate your initial tax based on the information it already has. Such a result of the tax settlement will be available on the Altinn portal at the turn of March and April.

Tax settlement in Norway

The first thing that will allow us to do tax settlements in Norway for 2018, is to obtain a tax card appropriate for the settlement period. If the taxpayer fails to fulfill this obligation, the Tax Office will impose an obligation on the employer to deduct 50% of the tax from the income earned. As you can see - this document is worth obtaining.

How does it go on?

At the turn of March and April, the Tax Office will make the preliminary tax settlement available on the Altinn platform (norw. skating check-in). This document is completed on the basis of information obtained by the tax office from employers, NAVu, banks and other entities that are important in the context of the tax amount. It is the taxpayer's responsibility to control this document. If it does not raise any objections, the Tax Office will consider it skatmelding for the final tax return (norw. skattepjor). The result will be made available on Altinn or sent by post to the address provided.

IMPORTANT! If you are not using Altinn, make sure you update your residence in folkregister. Otherwise, the Tax Office will not be able to provide you with the result of the tax return.

What to do when skattemelding does not match?

However, it may happen that tax settlement in Norway for 2018 presented by the Tax Office will not be consistent with the facts. In this case, the taxpayer is required to report the correction by April 30 (it is possible to extend the deadline until the end of May). The taxpayer will have to settle in person in principle in two cases:

  1. When the information in skatmelding will not be consistent with the annual settlements received by the taxpayer from his employer.
  2. The taxpayer will be entitled to such deductions as pendler status or write-offs of interest on loans.

What tax deductions are eligible?

The amount of the obligation in settlement tax in Norway for 2018 can be reduced as long as the taxpayer is entitled to certain write-offs. It is worth knowing that you can use the following deductions:

  • Standard write-off for a foreign commuting employee (the so-called pendler status),
  • write-off of interest on loans,
  • deductions for commuting,
  • for travel to school or kindergarten,
  • discounts for accumulated funds for BSU.

2018 tax settlement in Norway

The most important point to remember is that the tax settlement in Norway for 2018 must be completed by April 30, 2019. Statteetaten, however, provides for the possibility of extending this deadline until May this year, but only for individuals. If the taxpayer has no objections to skatmelding or will not apply for any additional allowances, settlement will be made automatically. Personal settlement will be necessary in the event of inconsistencies observed in the initial document or in a situation where the taxpayer wants to apply for additional allowances, e.g. for pendler status.
