Study in Norway Freer choice of schools for upper secondary school students
The government wants to have a freer choice of schools for upper secondary school students
Free choice of schools will be introduced nationwide, but municipalities will be able to define their own admission areas. This means that municipalities can no longer be verified according to the local school rule. The government wants students to have more choice in which high school to start. Not many now have the right to choose as they would like to have, says Education and Integration Minister Guri Melby.
Last year, the government sent two models for free school selection for consultation. However, there were many model proposals.
Based on the recordings, a new model will now be created that will give students the freedom to choose their school. At the same time, he will follow some of the recordings that appeared at the hearing. Melby informed.
The Directorate of Education was commissioned to develop the new model. Further work will be carried out in close dialogue with the KS and the poviat communes.
- The Education Directorate will also consider the consequences of a freer choice of school, including on transport costs. It will also examine the demand for flats for students and the school structure, says the Minister of Education and Integration.
The Ministry of Education and Science aims to ensure that the changes can be approved in the spring of 2021 and affect the earliest students who apply for a place in high school in the fall of 2022.
