YR warns of heavy rainfall, flooding and the dangers of landslides in western Norway and much of southern and central Norway. There are several things you can do to keep your belongings safe.

According to varsom.no pheavy rains on Wednesday and Thursday are missed. This, coupled with the rise in temperature and subsequent melting of snow, will increase the flow of water in exposed streams and rivers. At worst, this can lead to extensive flooding, erosion and flood damage to both people and businesses.

"If you haven't secured your assets yet, it's still time to do it," says Teresa Nielsen, claims prevention therapist at Fremtind, the insurance company SpareBank 1 and DNB.

Several landslides are expected, some with potentially serious consequences for homes and buildings

- Excessive water and the danger of aquaplaning can create difficult driving conditions. Consider leaving your car if you live in the affected areas. Check the route, adjust your speed and drive according to the conditions, advises Nielsen.

Homeowners have a responsibility to prevent

As a homeowner, you are required to take preventive measures against any damage that may occur where you live. By law, anything that is insured against fire is insured against natural damage as well, but as a homeowner, there are some steps you need to take as a homeowner.

- If you live in sensitive areas there are several steps you can take. Follow local authority news, weather and news. You can also follow varsom.no. The color codes tell you how serious the flood is expected, says Nielsen.

NVE also has its own notification service subscriber.varsom.no. There you can register to receive notifications by e-mail and / or SMS, among others about floods in your commune.

Move and empty

- You must make sure the drains are open. Empty the basement of valuables and make sure that what you cannot move has been lifted off the floor, says Nielsen.

Many also have vacation homes that they should look into. Those with caravans along the coast, lakes and waterways should move them to a safe place.

- And then it is important to help those who are not able to take the necessary measures themselves.

You must do this if your home or your belongings are prone to flooding

  • Make sure the drains are open so that the water can run off freely.
  • Make sure nearby streams are not piled up with garden debris, twigs, or other objects.
  • Clean your garden of furniture, loose materials, barbecues, and items that may be seized by water.
  • If there is a risk of water entering the basement or garage, pick up items from the floor. Place things on shelves, bookcases and plastic boxes that are resistant to water, and remove valuables from the basement.
  • Remove loose carpets and other loose floor coverings.
  • Close the doors and windows to the basement and attic. If necessary, cover with sandbags.
  • Follow news broadcasts and news from local authorities. In the event of a major flood, measures can be implemented by the authorities.
  • Agree with neighbors or friends to take action.
