What is Riksrevisjonen?

This is the Office of the Auditor General. It is the audit and control body of the Storting. The overriding task of the Office of the Auditor General is to monitor whether state funds are used and managed in a financially sound manner and in accordance with the decisions and assumptions of the Storting.

The police are better able than before to deal with serious tasks and investigate serious crimes, but the investigation rate has decreased and the most serious cases are being investigated too long.

Norway has 12 police districts and 225 police stations and lensmannskontor. Whether and how the police achieve their goals varies.

General conclusions of the study

- Police meet national requirements for emergency response times and handling of serious incidents, but results vary by police district
- Norwegian Police are partially achieving their targets for criminal investigations
- The police work better with communes, but smaller communes are less satisfied than large ones
- Police chiefs keep track of the police district's tasks but have limited ability to manage resources and adapt them to their own district challenges
- Police ICT systems are old and unstable
- The governance dialogue between the Ministry of Justice and Emergency Preparedness and the Norwegian Police Directorate has improved, but is still largely controlled by action.

There are weaknesses in the handling of the most serious cases and in the conduct of investigations by the police

Much has improved in the police force in recent years. The reform of the police force has ensured higher competences, larger units and stronger working environments. Police handle serious tasks and investigate serious crime better than before.

There are still weaknesses in the handling of the most serious cases and in the conduct of investigations by the police. This could have serious consequences for the people involved.
