A shared charger is a new standard for portable devices and a reduction in electronic waste

On Wednesday, the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee of the EU adopted a position adopted by adopting a position on the amended Radio Equipment Directive by 43 votes in favor and 2 against.

The new rules will mean that consumers will no longer need a new charger and cable every time they buy a new device and will be able to use one charger for all their small and medium-sized electronic gadgets. Mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones and headsets, portable video game consoles and portable speakers that can be charged via cable would have to be equipped with a USB Type-C port, regardless of manufacturer. The exemptions would only apply to devices that are too small to have type USB port C, such as smart watches, health trackers and some sports devices.

This shift is part of wider EU efforts to sustainably develop products, in particular electronics, in the EU market, and to reduce electronic waste.

Clear information and labels about charging options

MEPs also want new devices to contain clear information and labels about charging options as well as whether the product includes a charger. This would help, they say, avoid misunderstandings and facilitate purchasing decisions for consumers, who often own several different devices and do not always need additional chargers.

With the growing use of wireless charging, MEPs want the European Commission to present a strategy by the end of 2026 that will allow for minimal interoperability of any new charging solutions. The aim is to avoid a new fragmentation of the market, further reduce environmental waste. This will provide convenience to consumers and avoid the so-called the "lock-in" effect created by proprietary charging solutions.

Next steps for shared chargers

Once the EU parliament as a whole approves the draft negotiating position in the May plenary session, MEPs will be ready to start talks with EU governments on the final shape of the rules.
