The autumn head lice campaign kicks off in Norway. Grab a lice comb and check on your kids this weekend so we can all help reduce the spread of lice.
On the weekend of September 1-3, the Institute of Public Health encourages all parents and carers to check their children and family members for head lice.
Head lice are a recurring problem in schools and kindergartens. Lice are estimated to occur in 1-2 percent of all people children in primary schools in Norway.
Important for joint control
– If next weekend everyone checks so that the lice can be removed at about the same time. Over time, this will help reduce head lice cases, says researcher Bjørn Arne Rukke from the pest control department at the Institute of Public Health.

How to find lice:
- Comb your hair with a lice comb (purchased at the pharmacy).
- Comb the entire length of the hair, from the scalp to the ends of the hair.
- Comb wet hair as this inhibits lice movement.
- To facilitate combing, you can use a conditioner.
- After each stroke, wipe the comb with paper or a towel and check for lice. Once the lice are dry, they will start to move.
- When combing dry hair, it is recommended to stand bent over a white towel or something similar. Then you can notice the lice falling off.
foundś lice? Three ways to get rid of lice:
- Treatment (dimethicone products are recommended)
- Daily combing of the hair with a lice comb for 14 days
- Cut your hair shorter than 0,5 cm.
Children with head lice do not need to be taken home from daycare or school, but should be treated as soon as possible. Lice are not transmitted by hats, stuffed animals, etc.
– We sent information letters to all communes, which in turn will be sent to all schools and kindergartens. If you have not received information and you have children in school or kindergarten, you will find all the information on our website - emphasizes Bjørn Arne Rukke.
