In several of the country's largest cities you have to pay a tax on studded tires, but how much does it cost and where do you pay it? We give you the answers!

Studded tires can be absolutely necessary in the winter, although many cities try to limit them for environmental reasons.

Driving on studded tires out of season is illegal, punishable by a fine of NOK 1000, but there are also cases where you can avoid a fine for using studded tires out of season if "driving conditions require it".

Here's what you need to know about studded tires:

When is studded tire season in Norway?

Nordland, Troms and Finnmark you can ride on studded tires from October 16 to May 1 .

the rest of the country The studded tire season lasts from... November 1 to the first Monday after Easter .

Where is the tax on studded tires applicable?

If you drive a car with studded tires in one of these cities, you must have a studded tire driving permit. If you are caught driving without a valid fare, the fine is NOK 750. In these cities you must pay tax on studded tires:

-Oslo

- To put away

–Trondheim

Both in Kristiansand, and Stavanger there were previously fees for studded tires. This has now been abolished and therefore no tax is required on studded tires in these cities.

What is the fee?

In three cities you can choose from three different options for vehicles weighing up to 3500 kg.

  1. daily fee valid for 24 hours for NOK 35
  2. Monthly subscription for one calendar month for NOK 450
  3. A season ticket for the entire season with spikes costs NOK 1400

Oslo You can pay the tax on studded tires at: Piggav.no website or via the Bil i Oslo app.

Bergen You can pay the tax on studded tires in: electronic form or via the Bil i Bergen app.

Trondheim you can pay the fee for studded tires in electronic form or via the SmartPark application.
