– As in the previous two months, retail trading volume decreased in September. This is the third month in a row that a decline has been recorded. Furniture sales were one of the industries that contributed most to the decline, while sales at gas stations and grocery stores somewhat offset the decline this month, said senior advisor Anders Falla Aas of SSB.

From September 2022 to September 2023, there was a 2,5 percent decline in the calendar volume index. Overall, retail sales fell 2,9 percent from August to September 2023, according to seasonally adjusted trading volume data. This decline is the result of declines in wholesale sales and motor vehicle trade and repair, industries that are subject to significant month-to-month fluctuations. Retail also contributed to some extent to the decline.

Calendar trading volume in the entire trade sector decreased by as much as 7,0 percent from September 2022 to September 2023.

– The significant decline in the trade and repair of motor vehicles was the main reason for the overall decline on a year-to-year basis, said Anders Falla Aas.

The eurozone recorded a decline in August

Data from the European Union's statistical office, Eurostat (ec.europa.eu), showed euro zone countries had an overall decline of 1,2 percent in seasonally adjusted retail trading volumes from July to August 2023. Sweden grew by 0,6 percent in August, while Denmark had an increase of 1,6 percent.
