Preliminary data show that 72 people lost in traffic at the end of July. A clear increase compared to the first seven months of last year, when 40 people died in traffic.
In the first seven months of last year, 40 people died on grogi. Compared to the first seven months, this year with 72 road accident fatalities, shows a significant increase of 32 road fatalities. A particularly large number of serious accidents occurred in April, May and June.
- We are concerned about this development - says the head of UP Knut Smedsrud.
Aksjon grønne veier will run until the end of August
On this basis, Utrykningspolitiet (UP) allocated more resources to contribute to a more visible police force on the roads and it was decided that the summer police action "Aksjon grønne veier" would run until the end of August.
More visible police and more active speed cameras
This summer, European and national roads are a priority.
- There is the highest accident density there, and experience has shown that there are more serious accidents in summer than at other times of the year. In addition to the visible police, it was also assured that several speed cameras were active, says Knut Smedsrud.

Several road safety campaigns were also launched during the summer, in which the Utrykningspolitiet (UP) is involved together with other road safety actors: Norwegian Road Administration, Trygg Trafikk, the Road Safety Authority, Nye Veier AS, county councils and the Road Safety Association.
Too early to say anything about the cause
It is too early to say anything about the reason why more people are losing their lives in traffic this year, as most cases are still under investigation. Nevertheless, it can be seen that passenger car traffic increased by 15-20% compared to the previous two years and the number of registered motorcycles increased by 15% over the same period.
- In addition, it can be mentioned that 80 road fatalities last year were historically low and that there will be fluctuations - says the head of the UP.
