Secure energy situation and still high prices

– I am glad that the NVE analyzes show that we are not threatened with electricity rationing in the spring. It is good to see that the reporting system introduced by the government this summer has worked, but producers need to continue to be aware of their responsibilities throughout the winter, says Oil and Energy Minister Terje Aasland.

In July, a reporting system was introduced for large hydropower producers in southern Norway, where they must report on a weekly basis how they use the reservoir. This was done to give a better overview of regulated power production.

In the fall, energy producers stopped production. Very low production combined with energy imports and higher than usual rainfall resulted in a strong increase in the filling rate of reservoirs in southern Norway throughout the autumn.

The price level is expected to remain high

The fact that NVE's analyzes show that we are not at risk of rationing does not necessarily mean that prices will be lower. Restricting Russian gas exports means there is still too little energy on the European energy market. This still creates a precarious situation, and management expects high price level also in the future. NVE also notes that the energy situation could become difficult if it gets very cold.

– Although the development of the energy situation in Norway has gone in the right direction in recent weeks, we should be prepared for the prolongation of the energy crisis in Europe and high prices. It's hard for everyone when electricity is expensive, which is why the state provides electricity support for households. It helps people cut their electricity bills while encouraging them to conserve electricity, says Aasland.

– The situation with inactive nuclear power plants in Sweden shows that single incidents can have an impact on the energy situation in the future. Nevertheless, the situation in Norway is much better now than it was a few months ago, says Aasland.
