Glaze, terracotta, stoneware - what is it all about?

There are several types of ceramic tiles on the market. It is worth knowing how they differ from each other, because some of them will work better when laid on the floor, while others will be more suitable as a material for walls.

Wall tiles

The main purpose of the glaze is to put them on the walls. This is determined by the production technology. After firing, its surface is covered with additional glaze, which makes the color more attractive and gives it a shine. However, they are not suitable as a floor material. A disqualifying feature is the fact that the surface is slippery and in contact with water makes it difficult for a person standing on such a floor to maintain balance.

Ceramic tiles in Norway. On the floor? Terracotta

Terracotta, in turn, is fired at a higher temperature, which results in greater resistance and resistance to mechanical damage. It also does not have an additional slippery coating on the surface, making it a safer material for the floor. However, it is not recommended to use terracotta as an external material due to its low frost-resistant properties.

What about the tiles?

Stoneware, on the other hand, is becoming a more and more commonly used material. Such ceramic tiles are fired at the highest temperature of 1200 degrees Celsius, which makes them extremely durable. They are also distinguished by resistance to weather conditions, so they can be safely used outdoors. They also show resistance to rapid temperature changes, which makes them suitable as a wall material in the kitchen. In addition, in the case of, for example, pouring out water, they are not as slippery as glaze, which measurably increases the safety of use.

Versatile porcelain stoneware

The increasing popularity of stoneware is also due to the improvement of the dyeing technology and giving structures. Most fashionable ceramic tiles imitating wood are made of this material. There is also an ever wider range of colors available, which makes it a versatile and universal material.
