Dronning Eufemias gate in Oslo is 3 years after renovation. The investment cost was nearly one billion Norwegian kroner. As it turns out, this street may soon be closed to car traffic. All because of design errors that pose a great risk to cyclists and pedestrians.

Useless Dronning Eufemias gate

Dronning Eufemias gate after renovation includes a road lane, the width of which is 43,5 meters. Critics accuse the street not meeting its basic assumptions. Despite the large space, there are no solutions for the safety of cyclists and pedestrians. As a result, the road is not only completely useless, but driving on it is extremely dangerous.

Critics make the following three allegations:

  • more than half of the road lane is occupied by the unused tram traction,
  • the rest is occupied by road lanes intended for car, pedestrian and bicycle traffic,
  • cycle paths cross bus lanes, and cyclists are forced to join the traffic that is intense on this street.

According to experts, all the above issues indicate that Dronning Eufemias gate has been designed in a way that is conducive to road accidents. All because of the daily chaos caused by all road users - car drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and bus drivers. For this reason, Hanna Marcussen from the Green Party proposed to close the street to car traffic. In her opinion, only such a solution will increase safety in this place

No Responsible

Nettavisen tried to find out who was responsible for preparing and implementing the Dronning Eufemias gate renovation project. However, the journalists encountered typical official powerlessness - everyone pointed to someone else. The situation is so serious that the city authorities themselves Oslo decided to look into this matter and find those responsible. Identifying the culprits is the most important issue from the residents' point of view. According to Nettavisen, this is the only way for citizens to be assured that similar mistakes will not be repeated in subsequent road investments.
