The government's amendment to the state budget for 2023 proposes strengthening the free condom program by NOK 4 million. A sharp increase in venereal gonorrhea cases has led to an increased demand for condoms.
The free condom program is run by the Norwegian Directorate of Health, and you can order them online. Increased demand combined with increased costs result in the need for increased financial resources to maintain the current solution. The government is currently increasing the allocation by NOK 4 million in the 2023 budget.
Increase in gonorrhea cases
Strong growth the number of gonorrhea cases is related especially to people heterosexual. The ongoing epidemic particularly affects young people, who are the main target group of the free condom program.
– The distribution of free condoms is an important contribution to the work of municipalities and others to prevent sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and chlamydia, while contraception must be available to everyone. It is therefore an offer that needs to be secured, and we are now doing so because the Directorate of Health is receiving increased funding, he says Minister of Health and Care Ingvild Kjerkol.

Kjerkol calls on young people:
– This generation is the "reasonable generation." In most areas they are smarter than our generation. We have already secured an offer of free condoms for young people. So, dear young people: use a condom!
