According to Statistics Norway, a full-time employee cost his or her employer NOK 2022 on average in 881. This amount takes into account the employer's total costs related to employing employees. Depending on the industry in which the employee worked, the difference between the most expensive and cheapest employee that year was over a million crowns.

The purpose of statistics is to present the general costs of employing employees in enterprises. They are based on information provided by the companies themselves, including in their annual financial reports and to the a-ordningen (skatteetaten.no).

According to the new statistical data on labor costs of enterprises, the total labor costs of employment, converted into full-time employee or person-years increased by 3,0% in 2021-2022.

Costs related to an employee in Norway

Salaries and other monetary benefits are reported together as 'direct staff costs'. In 2022, they amounted to NOK 699 per person-year. Salary expenses are the largest and most important expense, but not the only expense that employers have for their employees.

These "indirect personnel costs", which in 2022 amounted to NOK 182 per person-year, include, among others, the costs of benefits in kind, pension plans, training and the employer's contribution.

– Benefits in kind are benefits that employees receive from their employer, other than cash benefits, such as discounted shares, a free car and a free mobile phone, often called fringe benefits. They amounted to NOK 19 per person-year.
– Employee pension and insurance programs are collectively referred to as social costs and amount to NOK 73 per person-year.
– Training costs include, among others, the costs of participation in courses, further education and apprentices. These amounted to NOK 12 per person-year.
– The tax that an employer must pay for its employees is the employer's tax. It is calculated based on the sum of all employer taxable benefits and varies depending on where in the country the workforce is employed. On average, this cost was NOK 95 per full-time employee.

Amounts vary by industry

The amount of costs employers incur with their employees varies by industry. In the oil and gas extraction and mining sector we find the "most expensive" workers, whose average price in 2022 was 1,54 million NOK for a person-year. About NOK 2022 million separated workers in this industry from those in hotels and restaurants, where the average cost per person-year in 466 was NOK 000.

There are relatively large differences in wages between different industries, as these statistics confirm, but there are also large differences in spending on benefits in kind, pensions and other types of labor costs.

A full-time employee costs approximately NOK 500 per hour

The statistics present two types of hours worked. In 2022, there were an average of 1781 hours per full-time employee, of which 1615 hours were actually worked.

Paid hours are all hours paid for by an employer, whether worked or not. These include hours associated with agreed pay, overtime and holidays. In 2022, the cost was NOK 494 per hour. This represents an increase of NOK 17 per hour, or 3,6 percent, compared to 2021.

In 2022, the cost per hour worked was NOK 545, an increase of NOK 12, or 2,2% compared to the previous year. Actual hours worked are paid hours less absences due to, among others, holidays, sickness and public holidays.

The costs per hour worked therefore ranged from NOK 328 in the hotel and restaurant industry to NOK 990 in the oil and gas extraction industry.

How much do we earn per year?

We calculate the average salary by adding the salaries of all employees and dividing them by the number of employees. The average monthly full-time equivalent salary in 2022 was NOK 53. Multiplying this amount by 150 gives an annual salary of approximately NOK 12.

Many people will find that the average seems high. The same applies to the average salary in individual professions. Therefore, it may not be appropriate to compare average wages with individual wages.

Annual salary includes full-time and part-time work. The remuneration of part-time employees was converted to what it would be if it were a full-time job.

A full year of work for a full-time employee does not equal the same number of working hours in all positions. Differences may arise, for example, from shift and rotation work, where the working week may vary from 37,5 hours.
