The Norwegian Road Administration encourages residents of southern Norway to put on winter tires. In the mountainous areas of this part of the country, there is already snow on the roads and for this reason some of them have even been closed. According to weather forecasters, even more snow may fall in the near future, which will slowly melt until the weekend.

You will not travel these roads
The crisis situation mainly affects those roads located in the mountains in southern Norway. Road 258 Strynefjellsvei is impassable due to the snow on it. In turn, the road 243 Aurlandsfjellet was closed to traffic due to a raging storm there. There are also heaps of snow on Highway 7 above the Hardangervidda, but road builders have not decided to close it.

There is snow in other places as well
The Meteorology Institute also recorded snowfall in Sognefjellet. The roads, however, are passable, as the snow layer only starts at 1200 meters and is expected to melt by the weekend.
Due to heavy rainfall in western Norway, the snow layer may appear as low as 1100 meters above sea level. However, weather forecasters predict its gradual melting, and eventually, on the weekend, the lower boundary of the layer will begin at 1400 meters above sea level.
Road builders encourage winter tires
The Lærdal Roads Authority encourages drivers to consider fitting tires winter if they go on mountain roads. According to Roger Nedreberge, it's time to expect more and more snowfall in Hille. In turn, Kristin Seter from the Institute of Meteorology in an interview with NRK.no adds that residents Norway must take into account that when going to mountainous areas, they may come across snow-covered roads. It is quite likely that in exceptionally unfavorable weather conditions, some of them will be closed to drivers.

When is winter tires compulsory in Norway?
The applicable regulations are separate for the north and south of the country. In the north (Finnmark, Nordland, Tromms districts) winter tires (optionally studded, we put them on all four wheels) are valid from October 15 to May 1, in the south from November 1 to April 15. However, depending on the current weather situation, there may be exceptions to these rules.
