On Tuesday, September 12, 2018, the World Volleyball Championships began. The Polish team went to group D along with teams such as Cuba, Puerto Rico, Iran, Bulgaria and Finland. Our players played the inaugural match with Kuba, with whom they won 3: 1. Apart from a slight shortness of breath in the third set, our volleyball players controlled the course of the game.

Different than 20 years ago

The schedule of Polish volleyball players has been arranged in a way that will allow them to enter the tournament calmly. The young team of Cubans is not the same team with which our players lost their first match at the World Cup in Sapporo 20 years ago. At that time, the Polish team finally took 17th place, while the Cubans won the bronze medal. It was at a time when the Cuban federation was disciplined and their representatives to Europe had not yet started to flee.

The first games are always tough

Wojciech Grzyb remembers the atmosphere in the locker room before the first match at the 2006 World Championships. Everyone was nervous, but the stress disappeared after a few bounces of the ball. At that time Polish team won against China 3-0 in the first match and was eliminated only in the final, ultimately taking second place.

Slight breathlessness in the third set

Wojciech Grzyb in an interview with TVP Sport pointed out that the Cubans are a strong and high-jumping team. This is why they are so erratic. He admits, however, that they are not very experienced players yet, which makes them irregular in their game. As a result, the Poles won 3-1 and the victory would have been smooth had it not been for the momentary spurt of the opponents in the third set.

The Poles played such a line-up

Before the game, the fans wondered which players the Belgian coach Vital Heynen would play. Ultimately, he decided to field the following volleyball players in the top seven: quarterback Fabian Drzyzga, attacker Bartosz Kurek, host Artur Szalpuk and Michał Kubiak, center player Piotr Nosowski and Jakub Kochanowski, and libero Paweł Zatorski.

Another game against Puerto Rico

After their inaugural 3-1 victory against Kuba, the Polish team will face Puerto Rico in their second game. Purely in theory, this is a representation much weaker than Poland, but no one should be underestimated. According to experts, it is difficult to judge the class of this team at the beginning of the competition. The more that you can watch it most often during big tournaments.
