The Nigard glacier retreated by about 80 meters during the past summer season. According to specialists, this may mean a greater threat to tourists. Especially considering the fact that this natural site is a destination for many excursions. It may also turn out that the glacier will disappear within 5 years.

The Nigard Glacier is melting

According to Professor Atle Nesje from the University of Bergen, Nigard Glacier begins to pose an increasingly serious threat to visiting tourists. All because the face of this object retracted 80 meters inland during the past summer.

- “I was afraid of the autumn measurements. The observation that this object went back 80 meters is something new and surprising, ”added Alte Nesje in an interview with NRK.no.

It has also started to melt and crack, with the result that there is a high risk that some of the ice block may detach from the rest and fall directly on tourists. And these are many in recent years because Nigard Glacier is eagerly chosen as a destination for excursions.

"It's not the hot summer that is the cause"

Nigard Glacier is part of the Joste Glacier. It is located in the municipality of Luster in Sogn og Fjordane. It has been supervised for many years by Bjarne Kjøllmoen - senior inspector from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (abbr. NVE). In his opinion, it was not the hot summer that caused the glacier to retreat.

- "The fact that Glacier he stepped back so deep is not only dictated by the hot summer. Rather, it is an effect of what has happened to this object over the past decades. Suffice it to point out that in recent years we have recorded much more intense melting than snowfall, ”says the inspector in an interview with NRK.

The Nigard Glacier will disappear?

In his opinion, Nigard Glacier it may completely disappear if the current trend continues. Such a fate could affect its lowest part within four to five years. It is worth emphasizing that NVE also conducts measurements on others Norwegian glaciers. The conducted analyzes showed that the forehead of each of them retreated by an average of 38 meters.
