Parental leave in Norway - what are the rules?

New parents' leave for parents in Norway is granted. During it, they can count on the payment of parental benefit. However, there are a number of conditions necessary for NAV to consider the submitted application as justified.

Parental leave in Norway - general rules

Basic criteria

Application for leave for parents in Norway is examined by NAV - the Polish equivalent of ZUS. During this period, the parental allowance that is to be provided is paid out source income while caring for the child. Parental leave in Norway may be granted to personsthat meet the following criteria:

  • you have a minimum income of 0,5G, i.e. NOK 46,
  • the employee will work in the last 6 out of 10 months.

This benefit is paid in two variants:

  • 80% of salary for 59 weeks or
  • 100% of salary for 49 weeks.

The amount of leave for parents in Norway

In both cases the amount of the allowance is calculated according to the new rules. NAV takes into account the amount of income, if the employment relationship lasted less than 3 months. If the employee had the essential breaks at work, then his parental benefit will be calculated as if it has been working all this time.

Amount of parental benefit is equal to the average wage obtained in the entire calculation period. NAV takes into account the following sources of earnings:

  • employment relationship,
  • business income,
  • sickness allowance,
  •  for the unemployed,
  • pregnancy allowance,
  •  training,
  • care allowance,
  • with rehabilitation.

Documentation

Do application for parental leave in Norway the following attachments must be attached:

  • pregnancy card,
  • act birth of a child,
  • registration of stay in Norway or permit to stay,
  • salary episodes for the last 6 months,
  • documents confirming the other parent's return to work.

Leave periods for parents in Norway

Parental leave in Norway generally divided into three periods: common (norw. foreldrepenger), only for the father (norw. pappapermission) and only for the mother (norw. modrekvote). In the case of the latter period, we are talking about maternity leave.

The period is intended only for the mother - that is, different maternity leave - is available in two different dimensions. Everything depends on date of birth. If it happened after July 1, 2018, the duration of the leave is 15 weeks. If it happened before that datethen the mother has 15 weeks to use.

Remember! The first 6 weeks are compulsory for the mother and cannot be selected later. 

The entire period common to the mother

It may happen that the father has not worked out leave rights for parents in Norway. Then the entire joint period can stay used by the mother. Therefore, in such circumstances, she will be entitled to it all foreldrepenger, Ie. 49 weeks ze 100% rate and/ or 59 weeks at 80% rate the amount of remuneration.

Parental leave in Norway it's also time that can be used by father. However, one must be met two conditions:

  • the mother will take up employment for at least 75% of the full-time job,
  • the mother will take up school day studies.

There is also the possibility of transfer period allotted for the father for maternity leave. The reasons must, however, be well argued to NAV considered the submitted application to be justified. To the circumstances such should be included, for example father's illnesswhich prevents him from caring for the child.

Parental leave in Norway - postponement

It is worth being aware of the fact that leave for parents in Norway can be postponed. This applies, inter alia, to transfer of the unused part parental leaveif full size falls out during it annual leave. Then unused days can be choose at another time. However, an appropriate application must be submitted at the latest on the last common period day.

The mother can also benefit from the postponement his leave entitlement. Except for the first 6 weekswhich are mandatory in any case. NAV will accept the application if maternity leave it cannot be used e.g. for a reason the return of the woman for full-time work.
