There has been a lot of talk lately about issues related to global warming. It cannot be denied that the situation is difficult. The ecosystem is seriously disrupted. The pollution of the Baltic Sea, climate change, political problems - all these affect the amount of catches. Cod habitats (especially those in southern Norway) are diminishing. The cod crisis is a fact, how is the situation in practice? We invite you to read the text.

Cod Crisis - What Are Scientists?

Unfortunately, the forecasts for the future are not optimistic. Tore Johannessen of the Marine Research Institute (Havforskningsinstituttet) from Bergen in an interview for Aftenposten says directly:

“Cod has lost its primary food niche. The ecosystem has gone through what we scientists call regime change. The major changes in plankton populations occurred after 2002. This shook the entire sea food pyramid. An important factor that contributed to this was the increase in the annual mean temperature which has increased by 1,5 degrees since the XNUMXs. "

The reasons for this rotation are different. Of course, climate change, which is constantly increasing, is of course not without significance. Tore Johannessen of the Marine Research Institute said later in the interview:

“We can say with high probability that one of the most important factors in the observed changes is that it is getting warmer in the sea. However, we must remember about other anthropogenic factors that affect the ecosystem. So let us not forget about the eutrophication of the seas through the excessive supply of nutrients entering the environment from agriculture and industry, as well as the irrational use of fossil fuels. "

Holidays on the Baltic Sea without cod?

Cod crisis - holiday on the Baltic Sea without fresh fish!

This summer season, tourists relaxing by the Baltic Sea felt the cod crisis on their own skin. It was very difficult to find fryers where we could get really fresh fish on our plate. I asked my friends who had recently been on vacation at the Polish seaside for their opinion.

“We came with the family for a family vacation. We wanted our daughter to try some fresh cod straight from the pan. However, it rarely happens to be on the menu of fryers or coastal restaurants. If it is, its freshness certainly raises doubts ". - says Agata, returning with her family from Vacation in Ustka.

Unfortunately, the ecosystem will not recover. However, we can try to care for the planet and use its gifts wisely - to care for our common good.
