In January, the situation was slightly turned upside down. The month was the coldest in a long time, and if you believe the meteorologist, it will be so long.
- It's clearly colder than usual. Probably a few places had the lowest temperatures in a long time, says meteorologist Roar Inge Hansen in Storm.
January in Western Norway and Trøndelag was the coldest since 2010. By low temperatures of the last few days in eastern Norway it probably hasn't been this cold there in eleven years.
There was also extremely little rainfall. Moreover, in the higher parts of the mountains it can be much warmer than in the valley.
And if meteorologists are to be believed, extremely cold temperatures will remain until March.
Low temperatures
The polar front is a border area that signifies a sharp temperature difference between cold polar air and warm subtropical air.
The Polar Front extends fairly far south of the eastern side of the United States towards Europe.
- Usually the Arctic Circle runs north, so it gets warmer in Norway. Now it is quite calm and low temperatures remain - says the meteorologist.
The fact that we are taking air from the North Pole also helps to cool down. In addition, Norway has extremely cold eastern winds from Russia and Siberia.
This weekend there is around 25 minus for a large part of the mainland. On Friday it was 32 minus in Hemsedal, 33 minus in Folldal and as much as 35 minus in Gudbrandsdalen.
Currently, the conditions make the winter months to which we are used to are completely different. While temperatures are very low in the south, in fact, northern Norway had normal, or even slightly warmer, temperatures.
