Johnson & Johnson vaccine in Norway offered outside of the immunization program.

The government has decided that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine will be offered outside of the immunization program. From June 15, you can make an appointment with private doctors, immunization clinics and some GPs who offer the vaccine. People who want the Johnson & Johnson vaccine are advised to go to helsenorge.no and read about the vaccine and to whom it can be offered before contacting a doctor.

- The government believes it is right to offer this vaccine as an option for some people who meet its criteria. Basically, we recommend people follow the immunization program, but some may still have good reasons for wanting the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, says Minister of Health and Welfare Bent Høie.

It is a single dose vaccine, which means you are fully vaccinated three weeks after vaccination

Johnson & Johnson's vaccine has been approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and is part of the vaccination program in most European countries. It is a single-dose vaccine, which means you are fully vaccinated three weeks after vaccination. Norwegian Directorate of Health believes the vaccine may be appropriate in the following situations:

  • travel essential to countries with high levels of infection or to areas where the doctor believes the benefits outweigh the risks of Janssen.
  • people who are in such a demanding life situation related to non-vaccination that the time remaining until the next vaccine administration is life-threatening.
  • When a close family member has severe cancer, or a close family member is receiving other immunosuppressive treatment and the doctor thinks the benefits of the vaccine outweigh its risks with Janssen.
  • when a doctor determines that there is a serious mental illness, risk life or significant deterioration in quality of life as a result long-term isolation and high activity load.
  • in addition, based on specific professional medical judgment, there may be cases where the physician, based on a comprehensive assessment and knowledge of a person's life situation, determines that the benefits for the individual outweigh the risks. It has to be based on your individual life situation.

"These are fairly strict criteria, which means that anyone who wants the vaccine will not be able to get approval for it from a doctor," says Health and Health Minister Bent Høie.

Doctors are not required to offer a vaccine

It is the doctor who has the final say in assessing whether a patient should receive the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The patient has the right to participate in the decision making, but cannot request the vaccine. The vaccine and vaccinations are provided free of charge. There are separate reimbursement rates for doctors in connection with consultations and vaccinations.

– There is no requirement for doctors to offer the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, but the government has set up a program for GPs to private doctors and vaccination clinics could prescribe the vaccine if they wanted. “An individual physician makes a specific assessment of the medical effectiveness of offering the vaccine to those who want to receive it,” says Høie.

The state pays the expenses. The vaccine and vaccinations are free

Rare and serious side effects of the vaccine Johnson & Johnson, the individual situation, the infection situation in Norway, and the fact that the effect of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is assumed to be somewhat less than that of the vaccines in the vaccination program are important in this assessment. Doctors' offices are encouraged to post information on their websites or municipal websites if they offer the vaccine to make it easier for people who wish to receive it to know who to contact. Doctors wishing to offer a vaccine can order it via the online solution at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. The vaccine and vaccinations are free, and all costs are covered by the state at certain rates. Doctors cannot charge extra for the administration of this vaccine.

The vaccination program will offer all persons over 18 years of age in Norway the first dose of the vaccine before the beginning of August

All vaccinations in Norway are voluntary. The vaccination program will be offered to all people over 18 years of age life in Norway the first dose of the vaccine before the beginning of August. Vaccines from BioNTech-Pfizer and Moderna are used. The opportunity to be assessed for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine outside the vaccination program is therefore an optional program.
